Second dispatch rider killed in 24 hours at Otedola Bridge

Another dispatch rider has lost his life in a fatal road accident involving a heavy-duty truck at Otedola Bridge inward Secretariat along the Ogudu Toll Gate corridor in Lagos.

The incident, which occurred less than 24 hours after a similar tragedy, has heightened concerns over the safety of dispatch riders on major highways across the state.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash involved a Volvo truck and a dispatch motorcycle, with the rider dying instantly from the impact.

LASTMA in a statement signed by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said officials on routine patrol responded swiftly to the scene, securing and cordoning off the area to prevent further accidents, especially given the heavy traffic along the corridor.

The remains of the deceased were handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while police operatives from the Alausa Division provided security to maintain order during the rescue and evacuation process.

The damaged truck and motorcycle were subsequently removed by a tow truck, allowing for the gradual restoration of traffic flow.

Despite the prompt intervention, the accident caused significant congestion, with traffic stretching toward the Berger axis before officials were able to ease the gridlock.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and called for stricter adherence to traffic regulations.

He stressed the need for increased vigilance among road users, particularly operators of articulated vehicles and dispatch riders.

“LASTMA remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to intensify advocacy aimed at reducing road fatalities and promoting a culture of road safety across Lagos State,” he said.
