Effurun Shooting: Police Order Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Involved

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, prompted immediate disciplinary action following directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, all officers connected to the incident were withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary proceedings.

Findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee established that the principal officer, Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and regulations guiding the use of firearms.

The committee described his actions as unlawful and unprofessional, noting that they amounted to a breach of the oath to protect lives and uphold the law.

Following the review, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of the officer and others found culpable, a decision approved by the Inspector-General and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.

The police said that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over the extrajudicial killing.

The Inspector-General reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power and unlawful use of force, stressing that no officer has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.

He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.

The police urged members of the public to remain calm, reaffirming their commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
