MURIC Urges Prosecution of Plateau Suspects After Army Arrests Nine Over Killings

Plateau State

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called for the prosecution of nine suspected militia members arrested by troops in Plateau State, insisting the case must be thoroughly investigated and not abandoned.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended by soldiers under Operation Enduring Peace, a security operation of the Nigerian Army, during a raid in Riyom Local Government Area on April 18, 2026. Arms and ammunition were said to have been recovered during the operation.

Reacting to the development, MURIC, in a statement issued by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, commended the military for the arrests but stressed that those implicated must face the full weight of the law.

The group expressed concern over the nature of weapons reportedly recovered, describing the development as alarming and calling for a transparent judicial process.

MURIC also urged relevant authorities to ensure that the case is not “swept under the carpet,” citing public interest and the need for accountability in addressing violence in Plateau State.

The organisation further highlighted previous security operations in the state where illegal arms factories were uncovered, calling for sustained efforts to tackle the proliferation of weapons and violent crimes.

While reaffirming its position on the need for justice, MURIC appealed to authorities to strengthen security measures and ensure that all those found culpable are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The arrests come amid ongoing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where authorities have continued efforts to curb violence and restore stability.
