Sanwo-Olu Appoints Epe Traditional Ruler as LASU's 6th Chancellor
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appointed the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, as the sixth Chancellor of Lagos State University.
Ogunsanwo was formally invested and sworn in on Tuesday at a ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Alausa, with the governor, who is the Visitor to the university, presiding.
The event was attended by members of the institution’s Governing Council, management, and traditional rulers.
The appointment followed the completion of tenure by the immediate past Chancellor, Gbolahan Elias.
Sanwo-Olu said the choice of the Epe monarch was aimed at sustaining the growth and development of the university, describing the appointment as historic.
According to him, Ogunsanwo is the first traditional ruler to be appointed Chancellor of the institution since its establishment.
He said the appointment reflects the government’s recognition of the role of traditional institutions in governance, social cohesion and moral leadership.
The governor added that the new chancellor’s track record in public service and community development qualified him for the role, noting that his emergence represents a blend of tradition and modernity needed for institutional progress.
Sanwo-Olu charged the new chancellor to uphold the dignity of the university, promote unity among its governing organs, and sustain its reputation as a centre of academic excellence.
He also urged the institution to continue serving as a hub for research and a partner in addressing contemporary societal challenges.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, described the appointment as a fusion of intellect, heritage and higher learning, expressing confidence in the chancellor’s ability to contribute to the university’s growth.
In his acceptance speech, Ogunsanwo pledged to work closely with the state government, the Governing Council and the university management to strengthen the institution’s values and traditions.
The new chancellor, a former chairman of the Lagos State Inland Revenue Service, is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Business Administration at the university.
