Police Rescue Five Abducted Gateway Polytechnic Students in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has successfully rescued five students of Gateway Polytechnic who were abducted in the Sapade area of the state.

Briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, said the incident occurred on April 27, 2026, when the Ipara Division received a distress call reporting a suspected kidnapping.

He explained that a patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene, where an abandoned ash-coloured Toyota vehicle riddled with bullet holes and stained with blood was discovered. Mobile phones and other personal belongings were also recovered from the vehicle.

Ojajuni added that an identity card found at the scene confirmed that the victims were students of Gateway Polytechnic, prompting the swift escalation of the case and activation of a full-scale rescue operation.

According to him, tactical units of the Command, including operatives from Isara Area Command, Ipara Division, SWAT, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit, Quick Response Squad, and OP MESA, were mobilised for a coordinated, intelligence-led mission.

The police commissioner said the joint teams carried out sustained bush-combing and tracking operations along suspected escape routes, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Fidiwo axis in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.

He noted that the sustained pressure mounted by the operatives led to the successful rescue of the five victims on April 28, 2026.

“The victims were immediately evacuated, debriefed, and given first aid before being taken to the Police Hospital in Abeokuta, where they received medical attention. They are currently in stable condition,” he said.

Ojajuni further disclosed that the kidnappers engaged police operatives in a gun duel during the operation but were overpowered and forced to flee with suspected gunshot injuries. He confirmed that no casualties were recorded among police personnel.

The commissioner commended the professionalism and gallantry of the officers involved, noting that their swift and coordinated response was critical to the success of the operation.

He assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The rescued students were later handed over to the management of Gateway Polytechnic.
