Effurun Shooting: Police Promise Justice as Officer Faces Disciplinary Action

The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, assuring that justice will be served.

In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when police operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri-Sapele Expressway.

According to Placid, the suspect had been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

However, while efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of established regulations, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The Force spokesman said the police leadership has since ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Abuja, where they are to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that due process would be followed.

He also urged members of the public to remain calm as disciplinary and legal proceedings continue.

The Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and abuse of authority, emphasizing its commitment to accountability and the protection of human rights.
