Police Arrest Four Suspects, Recover Firearms in Delta Anti-Cult Operations
The Delta State Police Command has arrested four suspects and recovered firearms and illicit substances in separate operations targeting cultism and violent crime in the state.
In a statement issued on Monday by the command's Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the police said the arrests were made during coordinated operations in Okpe Local Government Area and Ibusa, as part of ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities.
In one of the operations, operatives on surveillance patrol in Orerokpe arrested a 32-year-old suspect, Peter Onajite, and recovered a locally made double-barrel cut-to-size pistol, two live cartridges, and one expended cartridge.
The statement said the suspect also had sachets of suspected tramadol in his possession and allegedly confessed to being a leader of the Juris Confraternity. He is currently in custody while investigations continue.
In a separate operation, police foiled a suspected cult initiation in Ibusa following a tip-off. Three suspects, including a female, were arrested at a location on Jordan Road.
Items recovered from the scene include an English-made Beretta pistol with one round of live ammunition, as well as weapons such as axes, a hammer and a cutlass.
Edafe said efforts are ongoing to apprehend another suspect who fled the scene.
The state Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, commended officers involved in the operations and reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling cultism and other violent crimes through intelligence-led policing.
He warned that the police would sustain the crackdown on criminal groups across the state.
