Lagos APC Warns Officials Against Premature Endorsement of aspirants
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned party officials against the premature endorsement of aspirants ahead of the party’s forthcoming primaries.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the State Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, condemned what he described as the unauthorised actions of some local government chairmen who have been publicly presenting certain aspirants as consensus candidates.
Ojelabi said the act of raising the hands of aspirants and projecting them for elective positions without party approval was unacceptable and a violation of the principles of internal democracy, fairness, and due process.
According to him, such actions are capable of creating unnecessary tension, fuelling suspicion, and causing division within the party at a time when unity and discipline are critical.
He clarified that the Lagos State APC had not issued any guidelines, directives, or timetable for its primaries, stressing that any attempt to anoint aspirants at this stage was premature and without authorisation.
“The party has not approved any consensus candidate. Any individual or group engaging in such acts is acting outside the authority of the party,” he said.
The chairman warned that the party would not hesitate to impose disciplinary sanctions on any official who continues to engage in what he described as unauthorised and destabilising activities.
He, however, reassured party members interested in contesting elective positions that the APC remains committed to ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants.
Ojelabi added that the party would uphold its reputation for justice, equity, and transparency in its internal democratic processes.
He also urged party officials expected to serve as impartial umpires in the primaries to maintain neutrality in the interest of party unity, cohesion, and credibility.
