Speeding Tanker Kills Dispatch Rider in Lagos, LASTMA Averts Mob Attack
A dispatch rider has been killed in a fatal road accident involving a speeding tanker at the Motorways inward Estate axis of Alapere, Lagos.
Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of an empty NIPCO tanker, reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the rider, leading to his instant death.
The incident triggered outrage among fellow dispatch riders, who gathered at the scene and attempted to attack the tanker driver.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), however, swiftly intervened to prevent further violence.
LASTMA's Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq said in a statement that the agency’s personnel rescued the driver from the mob and handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical attention after he sustained serious injuries.
He disclosed that operatives from the Alausa Police Station were also deployed to the scene to restore order and disperse the agitated crowd.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
He warned that reckless driving and excessive speeding remain major causes of avoidable road fatalities.
“This incident underscores the need for greater vigilance and strict adherence to traffic regulations by all road users,” he said.
The statement also confirmed that the tanker and the wreckage of the motorcycle have been handed over to the police, while investigations into the crash are ongoing.
