Ebola: IGP Disu Urges Calm, Vigilance as FCT Records Confirmed Case
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has urged Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant following the Federal Government’s reported confirmation of an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Disu called on members of the public to observe preventive measures, maintain good personal hygiene and cooperate with public health authorities to help prevent further transmission of the disease.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the IGP advised Nigerians to wash their hands regularly with soap and water, avoid direct contact with the blood and body fluids of suspected cases, and stay away from potentially contaminated items.
He warned against touching or washing the bodies of people suspected to have died from Ebola.
He urged anyone who may have been exposed to the virus to contact health authorities promptly for guidance. Individuals who develop symptoms after possible exposure should avoid physical contact with others and call the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) toll-free helpline on 6232 for advice.
Disu further directed police personnel to observe appropriate infection-prevention measures while performing their duties and refer suspected cases to qualified health professionals.
He stressed that suspected patients, contacts and healthcare workers must be treated with dignity and without discrimination.
The Nigeria Police Force also urged residents to cooperate with contact-tracing teams, provide accurate information when required and avoid circulating unverified reports that could trigger unnecessary panic.
The public was advised to rely on official updates from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the NCDC and other authorised public health agencies.
The police said they would continue to support relevant health authorities in protecting lives and maintaining public order.
The statement described public health protection as a shared responsibility and urged Nigerians to remain informed, vigilant and non-discriminatory.
