The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has hosted the Amanyanabo of the Source, Elem-Kalabari, Torusarama-Piri in Rivers State, Alhaji Mujahid Abubakr Dokubo-Asari, at his palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, in a move to strengthen cultural ties between the Yoruba and Kalabari kingdoms.
The visit also provided an opportunity for Dokubo-Asari to formally invite the Ooni to his forthcoming Se Diye coronation ceremony scheduled for December 19, 2026, in Buguma, Rivers State.
According to a statement from the Ooni’s Palace, the meeting focused on fostering cooperation among traditional institutions, preserving cultural heritage and promoting peaceful coexistence across Nigeria’s diverse communities.
The statement was issued and signed by Sodiq Lawal on behalf of Otunba Moses Olafare, Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace.
Speaking during the visit, Dokubo-Asari, also known as Da Amakiri Tubo, stressed the importance of cordial relationships among traditional rulers, describing traditional institutions as vital to community development and conflict resolution.
He commended the Ooni’s leadership and commitment to peace and unity, saying the engagement offered an opportunity to strengthen bonds of brotherhood among traditional rulers from different parts of the country.
Responding, the Ooni, who is also Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, welcomed the visit and the invitation to the coronation, expressing his desire to deepen cultural, historical and economic relations between Ile-Ife and Elem-Kalabari.
The monarch said stronger cooperation among traditional institutions could promote mutual understanding, national unity and respect for Nigeria’s diverse cultural identities.
He also praised Dokubo-Asari for what he described as the courage and maturity with which he had handled his responsibilities since ascending the throne.
In a light-hearted remark about his guest, the Ooni said, “The fear of Asari Dokubo is the beginning of wisdom.”
The monarch further acknowledged Dokubo-Asari’s relationship with President Bola Tinubu, noting the importance of constructive engagement among traditional rulers, political leaders and other stakeholders in advancing peace and national development.
As a symbol of goodwill, the Ooni presented a bronze artwork to the Kalabari monarch, explaining that the gift represented the importance of the people to their leader.
He stressed that the strength of any traditional institution ultimately rests on the support, loyalty and well-being of the people it serves.
