The Oyo State Police Command has arrested six suspected armed robbers after a five-week intelligence operation in Ibadan, recovering five firearms, ammunition and other weapons.
The suspects were arrested at a hideout in the early hours of Saturday, October 10, following weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, identifying the suspects as Yusuf Adeyemi, 39; Isiaka Kayode, 40; Yusuf Basiru, 35; Adewale Lawal, 38; Saheed Lateef, 36; and Idowu Olanrewaju, 42.
Items recovered during the operation include a fabricated English-made pistol, a revolver pistol, a pump-action gun, a locally made cut-to-size gun and another locally made pistol.
The police also recovered five live cartridges and four cutlasses.
According to the statement, the suspects allegedly confessed during interrogation to belonging to a criminal gang responsible for terrorising residents of Ibadan and its environs.
The command said investigations were ongoing to establish the suspects’ involvement in other criminal activities and identify any accomplices.
The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led operations against armed robbery and other violent crimes.
He urged residents to provide credible information to support efforts to prevent and detect criminal activities across the state.
