WAEC Appoints Suleiman Kum New Head of Nigeria National Office



The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Mr. Suleiman Danlami Kum as the new Head of the Nigeria National Office, succeeding Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut.

The appointment was announced in a statement signed by WAEC’s Head, Public Affairs Department in Lagos, Moyosola Adesina, on Sunday.

Kum, a seasoned test developer and administrator, joins the top leadership of the Council after more than 28 years of service, having joined WAEC on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II.

He rose through the ranks to become Senior Deputy Registrar in 2024 and has served in several key positions across the Council, including Head of Examinations Security in Awka, Yola and Makurdi; Branch Controller in Gusau and Kano; Head of the Security Printing Department; Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja; Director of Administration; and Senior Deputy Registrar/Test Administration.

Before his appointment as Head of the Nigeria National Office, Kum served as Deputy Registrar in the HNO’s Office.

Born on October 16, 1970, in Minna, Niger State, Kum hails from Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

He obtained a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production with Second Class Honours, Upper Division, from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, in 1992.

He later obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria in 2025 and is currently completing a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Planning at the institution.

Kum began his professional career in 1993 during his National Youth Service Corps programme at the Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he served as Head of the Animal Production Unit.

He subsequently taught at Baptist High School, Jos, where he served in various capacities between 1995 and 1998 before joining WAEC.

At WAEC, Kum has played key roles in examination administration, security, test development and technological innovation.

Among his notable contributions were the establishment of the Gusau office as a Custodial Centre, the introduction of Variable Data Prints and enhanced code security features in security printing, the deployment of facial-recognition biometric devices to replace council-wide attendance systems, and the successful delivery of Achievement Tests through the Computer-Based Examination mode.

WAEC described Kum as a professional with extensive experience in test development, test administration, examination security, and branch and zonal office management.

Throughout his career, he has received several institutional commendations, accolades and awards for his integrity, diligence, innovation and commitment to service.

He has also participated in national and international training programmes, conferences and symposia, including programmes in the United Kingdom, and has published works in national and international volumes as well as presented academic and professional papers.

Kum is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management.

He is married with children, and his hobbies include travelling, swimming, reading and watching movies.
