WAEC Appoints Nigerian, Amos Dangut, As New Registrar

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut of Nigeria as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year tenure from October 2026 to September 2031.

Dangut succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia and becomes the 14th Registrar of the examination body.

Fhis was made known in a statement issued and signed by Head, Public Affairs, WAEC Headquarters, Accra, Ghana, Demianus G. Ojijeogu.

His appointment was ratified by the WAEC Council, the organisation’s international governing board, at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

Dangut assumed office on October 1, 2026, after serving as Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria since October 2, 2023.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

He began his career in education in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he served as a WAEC examiner, before joining the Council in 1998.

Over the years, he has held various positions within WAEC, including Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer in the Test Development Division, Branch Controller in Yola, Controller of the Post Examinations Department and Zonal Coordinator of the Ikeja Zonal Office.

He also served in the Head of National Office’s office before his appointment as Head of the WAEC National Office, Nigeria.

WAEC described Dangut as experienced in test development, test administration and branch and zonal office management, with more than two decades of experience in applying information and communications technology to examination processes.

As Head of the National Office, he championed initiatives aimed at improving examination delivery, security and efficiency. These included the introduction of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialisation of question papers and a Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also oversaw the development and implementation of the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.

Dangut has served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Grange Educational Foundation.

He also represented WAEC at education policy forums, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

According to WAEC, Dangut has published papers in national and international journals and presented papers at various conferences and professional forums.

He is currently the Regional Representative of the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).

Dangut is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).

He is also interested in swimming, tennis and farming.
