Enugu: Phone Snatcher Jailed Five Years, Suspected Shoplifter Remanded
A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for robbery after snatching an iPhone XR valued at ₦240,000 from a woman in Enugu.
The convict, Ejike Nnam, was also sentenced to three years for conspiracy, with both sentences to run concurrently.
According to a police statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the incident occurred at about 8 p.m. on October 8, 2026, along Bisalla Road, Enugu.
Nnam, who reportedly resides in an uncompleted building at Nkpokiti, Enugu, allegedly committed the offence alongside an accomplice who remains at large.
The police said he was arrested and arraigned before the Enugu North Magistrate Court the following day, where he pleaded guilty and was convicted.
In a separate case, another suspect, 29-year-old Richard Chukwuma, was arraigned and remanded at the Enugu Correctional Centre over alleged shoplifting at a supermarket in the state.
Chukwuma was arrested at about 6:50 p.m. on October 7 after allegedly stealing a bottle of Jameson Green Whisky valued at ₦30,150.
The police said the suspect reportedly confessed during interrogation to having previously stolen 15 bottles of the same whisky from the supermarket.
Reacting to the cases, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the presiding Chief Magistrate for the prompt dispensation of justice in the phone-snatching case.
He also called for the speedy conclusion of pending police cases in courts across the state, noting that timely adjudication strengthens public confidence in the justice system and supports crime prevention.
The commissioner further praised the New Haven Police Division and the prosecution team for their diligence, while reaffirming the command’s commitment to thorough investigations and prosecution in accordance with the law.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
