Lagos Police Arrest 80 Suspects, Recover Guns, Vehicles In October Crackdown

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested or neutralised 80 suspects and recovered firearms, vehicles, ammunition and other crime-related exhibits in a major security crackdown across the state in the first days of October.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed this during a press briefing in Ikeja on the command’s operational successes, saying the arrests followed intelligence-led operations targeting armed robbery, traffic robbery, vandalism, vehicle theft, cult-related activities and fraudulent recruitment schemes.

Among the recoveries were four Beretta pistols, eight locally made pistols, four rounds of live 9mm ammunition, six vehicles, seven vehicle number plates, six mobile phones, six battle axes, four cutlasses, illicit drugs and vandalised iron materials and electrical wires.

The command also reported the arrest of 29 suspected traffic robbers allegedly operating along the Lekki-Epe axis, 19 suspects linked to an alleged fraudulent job recruitment scheme in Age-Mowo and nine suspects arrested over alleged vandalism of critical infrastructure along the Coastal Road.

In one of the major operations, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit reportedly engaged suspected armed robbers in a gun duel at their hideout along Gasikia Road, Ijora-Badia, on October 4.

CP Fatai said two suspects were neutralised, one escaped, while another suspect, identified as 26-year-old Patrick Azure, was arrested. Two Beretta pistols and four rounds of live 9mm ammunition were recovered.

He said preliminary investigation indicated that the gang was allegedly preparing for a robbery operation before the police intervention.

In another operation, three suspected members of a robbery gang allegedly linked to the theft of five vehicles and valuables estimated at about N50 million along the Ife Expressway in Osun State were arrested in Lagos.

The suspects, Chubuzor Anasihwe, 31; Uchena Steven, 26; and Ejike Ani, 31, were arrested at different locations, while a Toyota van allegedly connected to the operation was recovered.

The state Commissioner of Police said the suspects had made statements and were assisting investigators in efforts to recover other stolen vehicles, apprehend other members of the gang and recover the weapons allegedly used in the operations.

He said the command also arrested a suspected receiver of stolen vehicles, Adekoya Adekunle, 43, at Ishawo Agric, Ikorodu.

Four vehicles and seven vehicle number plates were recovered from his residence, including a Lexus RX 330 Jeep which the suspect allegedly admitted purchasing for N3.5 million in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

In Age-Mowo, 19 suspects comprising 17 males and two females were arrested over an alleged fraudulent recruitment scheme in which unsuspecting members of the public were allegedly lured with fake employment opportunities.

The command also reported the arrest of 14 suspected thugs and public nuisance offenders in Maroko, three alleged armed robbery and phone-snatching suspects in the Westminster and Marine Bridge areas, and a suspected gang leader linked to an alleged attack, robbery and vandalism involving a Nigerian Army officer and his family in Itire.

In another case, a 28-year-old man, Emmanuel Amadi, was arrested in Ikeja over an alleged robbery in which a female victim was reportedly drugged before three mobile phones valued at about N3.02 million were stolen.

CP Fatai said the command would sustain intelligence-led operations against criminal networks while strengthening cooperation with communities and other stakeholders.

He urged residents to provide timely and credible information on suspicious persons and activities, stressing that security remained a shared responsibility.
