NUJ Lagos To Honour Seyi Jakande For Leadership, Development Strides

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, is set to honour the Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Dr. Seyi Jakande, for his leadership and development initiatives in Ilupeju and Mushin.

The award, according to the NUJ Lagos State Council, is in recognition of Jakande’s performance and contributions to the development of the LCDA since he assumed office less than a year ago.

The council in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Press Week Committee, Wale Akodu, and Secretary, Moses Omorogieva, said the honour also recognises Jakande’s commitment to public service and efforts to sustain the legacy of his late father, former Lagos State Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, whose administration was associated with people-oriented policies and social development programmes.

Since assuming office, the younger Jakande has introduced several initiatives targeting the welfare and living conditions of residents, particularly children, youths and vulnerable members of the community.

Among the initiatives are free bus services for primary school pupils, a free meal programme every Friday for pupils in the 27 primary schools within the LCDA, and the distribution of free textbooks and writing materials.

The administration has also prioritised primary healthcare, youth empowerment and sports development, with sporting competitions organised to promote youth engagement, discover talents and encourage productive use of leisure time.

In the areas of security and environmental improvement, the council has embarked on the construction and installation of streetlights in previously poorly lit areas, particularly identified dark spots.

The initiative, the council said, is aimed at improving visibility at night and supporting security efforts within the community.

Security personnel have also been deployed to strategic locations to complement efforts to monitor and deter criminal activities across the LCDA.

The NUJ Lagos State Council said the initiatives have implications for human development, particularly in education, where free transportation, meals, textbooks and writing materials are helping to reduce the financial burden on parents and guardians.

The council said the award is intended to acknowledge the documented initiatives of the administration and its focus on programmes aimed at improving residents’ welfare.

The honour is expected to form part of the activities of the NUJ Lagos State Council as it continues to recognise individuals and organisations contributing to community development and public service in Lagos State.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. World Obesity Day: CAPPA Urges Tougher Curbs on Junk Food Marketing

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa has called for stricter government regulation of junk food marketing, warning that aggressive promotion of unhealthy foods is fuelling rising obesity and other noncommunicable diseases in Nigeria. In a statement issued to mark World Obesity Day 2026, CAPPA said decisive policy action is urgently required to protect public health, particularly among children and young people. The organisation noted that obesity has become one of the world’s most pressing health challenges, citing projections that nearly half of the global population — about four billion people — could be living with overweight or obesity by 2035.
