Europe-Bound Newlywed Excretes 72 Wraps Of Cocaine At Enugu Airport

A 25-year-old newlywed businessman, Lovely Chukwulobelu, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for allegedly attempting to traffic 72 wraps of cocaine to Portugal.

Chukwulobelu was intercepted at the airport’s departure hall on Thursday, September 25, 2026, while attempting to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Portugal via Addis Ababa.

The Agency, in a statement signed by the Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja,Femi Babafemi, on Sunday, September 27, 2026, said the suspect had ingested the cocaine and was subsequently placed under excretion observation, during which he egested all 72 wraps of the Class A drug.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that he was into car decoration business at the Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, Lagos, before relocating to Portugal in May 2023.

He said he returned to Nigeria recently and got married on September 13, but allegedly resorted to drug trafficking to offset expenses incurred during his wedding.

Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, have intercepted 2,550,000 pills of opioids weighing 1,640.55 kilogrammes in three monitored consignments imported from India and Bangladesh.

The agency said the consignments contained Tramaking 225mg, Tramaking 250mg and Royal Tapentadol 250mg and were shipped through Qatar Airways, RwandAir and Ethiopian Airlines.

In Bauchi State, NDLEA operatives arrested two suspects, Umar Hamidu, 35, and Abdulkarim Salihu, 45, with 300 compressed blocks of cannabis weighing 262.5kg. The drugs were allegedly concealed in a false compartment of a truck intercepted along the Maiduguri bypass.

In Edo State, two cannabis farms with an estimated combined yield of 1,360.23kg were destroyed at Eko Camp, Ilushi, by NDLEA operatives supported by soldiers.

In Lagos, two women, Odumabo Kehinde, 36, and Obiekwe Chioma, 40, were arrested during a raid at Anifowoshe Street, Mushin, where 3.4kg of cannabis was recovered.

Another suspect, 58-year-old Ugwu Johnson, was arrested at Ebute-Ero Motor Park with 5.920kg of cannabis, 2,400 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 8,400 tablets of nitrazepam and 40,000 pills of tramadol.

In Oyo State, two Togolese nationals, Yinusa Abdulsamad, 35, and Fatai Baba, 33, were arrested along the Iganna-Ilero Road with 305.6kg of cannabis allegedly concealed in two pickup vans.

The NDLEA said the suspects were allegedly involved in a cross-border trafficking operation moving cannabis sourced from Ghana into Nigeria through the Oyo axis.

At the Seme border in Badagry, Lagos, five suspects were also arrested with 420 cartons of nitrous oxide, popularly known as laughing gas, weighing 1,688.4kg. Two vehicles allegedly used to convey the consignment from the border were also seized.

The agency said its commands across the country also continued sensitisation activities under its War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, campaign in schools, worship centres, workplaces and communities.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers involved in the operations and urged personnel nationwide to sustain the agency’s balanced approach to drug control.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa has called for stricter government regulation of junk food marketing, warning that aggressive promotion of unhealthy foods is fuelling rising obesity and other noncommunicable diseases in Nigeria. In a statement issued to mark World Obesity Day 2026, CAPPA said decisive policy action is urgently required to protect public health, particularly among children and young people.
