CP Giwa Orders Massive Deployment For Local Government Elections in Enugu, Warns Against Violence

The Enugu State Police Command has ordered massive deployment of personnel, operational and intelligence assets across the state ahead of Saturday’s local government elections.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, directed the deployment across the 17 Local Government Areas and 260 wards for the September 26, 2026 Chairmanship and Councillorship elections being conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC.

The Command also announced restriction of human and vehicular movements across the state from 6am to 4pm on election day.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the restriction exempts persons on essential duties and duly accredited election officials.

CP Giwa also barred quasi-security outfits from participating in election security and directed armed security personnel assigned to VIP escort duties not to accompany their principals to polling units.

The Commissioner assured residents of adequate security before, during and after the elections, in collaboration with other security agencies.

He urged eligible voters to turn out and exercise their franchise peacefully, while warning political parties, candidates and their supporters against electoral malpractice and other acts capable of disrupting the elections.

The Command said anyone found violating the law would face the full weight of the law.

Members of the public were also urged to report suspicious persons and activities that could undermine the peaceful conduct of the elections to the nearest police station.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. World Obesity Day: CAPPA Urges Tougher Curbs on Junk Food Marketing

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa has called for stricter government regulation of junk food marketing, warning that aggressive promotion of unhealthy foods is fuelling rising obesity and other noncommunicable diseases in Nigeria. In a statement issued to mark World Obesity Day 2026, CAPPA said decisive policy action is urgently required to protect public health, particularly among children and young people. The organisation noted that obesity has become one of the world’s most pressing health challenges, citing projections that nearly half of the global population — about four billion people — could be living with overweight or obesity by 2035.
