Delta Police Raid Criminal Hideouts, Arrest Two Suspects, Recover Guns, Ammunition, Daggers, Battle Axe

The Delta State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on illegal firearms and violent crime following the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of two pump-action guns, 18 live cartridges and other dangerous items in separate intelligence-led operations.

The operations, carried out by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and Command Anti-Cult Unit (CACU), were conducted in Obiaruku and Ndokwa West Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in the first operation on September 12, operatives of the VCRU stormed a residence in Obiaruku following credible intelligence that the occupant was in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Joel Iwomi of Umuebu, Obiaruku, allegedly resisted the operatives' attempt to gain access to the premises.

The police eventually gained entry and conducted a search, recovering one pump-action gun and 18 live cartridges. Iwomi was arrested and taken into custody, while investigation continues.

In a separate operation on September 9, operatives of the CACU arrested Chukwuka Nzete, also known as “Ododo”, of Isupe Community, Ndokwa West LGA.

The suspect was allegedly involved in the illegal sale and proliferation of firearms and was also suspected of operating a shrine where criminal elements were allegedly fortified.

A search of his residence reportedly led to the recovery of another pump-action gun, four dagger knives, one battle axe and pots containing substances suspected to be charms.

The suspect remains in custody as investigators work to establish the full extent of his alleged activities and possible links with other criminal elements.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel Erale, reaffirmed the command's determination to deny criminals access to illicit firearms and other weapons capable of threatening public safety.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly provide credible information on suspicious persons, illegal firearms and criminal activities in their communities.

The Commissioner assured members of the public that actionable information supplied to the police would be treated with the necessary confidentiality.

The latest operations underline the growing focus by the Delta State Police Command on intelligence-led policing as security agencies step up efforts to check the circulation of illegal weapons and prevent violent crime.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods.
