Eti-Osa Council Marks One Year With N50m Empowerment Grant

Adetoro: Leadership Is About Touching Lives, Creating Opportunities



The Eti-Osa Local Government Chairman, Omo’Oba (Dr.) Adeola Alimot Adetoro, has marked his first year in office with a N50 million empowerment grant for traders, artisans, small business owners, women, youths and vulnerable residents across the council’s wards.

Adetoro presented the grant during an anniversary programme held at the council secretariat on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Speaking at the event, the chairman said his administration assumed office with the conviction that leadership was about touching lives, engaging communities, solving problems and creating opportunities for residents.

He said the administration’s six-pillar HEYIGA Agenda was developed to drive development across Eti-Osa, with empowerment as one of its key components.

According to him, the N50 million grant was designed to provide direct economic support to residents and enable beneficiaries to expand their businesses, support their families and contribute to the local economy.

“Empowerment is not charity; it is an investment in our people,” Adetoro said.

The chairman also highlighted some of the administration’s achievements in the health sector, including the distribution of nutritional food packs to pregnant women, hypertension and diabetes screening, and measles-rubella vaccination.

He said a new health facility had been commissioned at Lafiaji, while the foundation had been laid for another health centre in Ikota.

Adetoro also listed road projects completed by the administration, including Ogunyemi Street in Itedo, Ibrahim Atere Road in Gbara and Engineer Murphy Road in Igbo Efon.

In the education sector, he said the council had distributed back-to-school packs, provided free GCE forms and organised a spelling bee competition.

He also disclosed plans for a functional electronic library in Eti-Osa.

The chairman said the projects and programmes demonstrated the administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises to residents.

He assured residents that the second year of his administration would witness further interventions in roads, education, healthcare and youth and women empowerment.

Adetoro urged beneficiaries of the N50 million grant to use the funds judiciously and grow their businesses.

“Let this seed grow into a thriving business. Let your success story inspire others,” he told the beneficiaries.

The chairman thanked his deputy, Hon. Idowu Adeola Badru, councillors, management and staff of the council, as well as other stakeholders, for their support during the administration’s first year.

He said the administration remained committed to building an Eti-Osa that was healthier, cleaner, greener, better educated, economically empowered, infrastructurally stronger and food secure.

At the event, some apex leaders in Eti-Osa, including Hon. Shade Mondiu and Hon. Noheem Adams, Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, commended the chairman for prioritising people-oriented programmes.

A former council chairman, Hon. Saheed Bankole, who presented cheques to some of the beneficiaries, urged them to make judicious use of the funds.

Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the grant, saying it would help strengthen their businesses and create opportunities to employ additional workers.

They said increased business activities would contribute to the socio-economic development of Eti-Osa Local Government.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa has called for stricter government regulation of junk food marketing, warning that aggressive promotion of unhealthy foods is fuelling rising obesity and other noncommunicable diseases in Nigeria. In a statement issued to mark World Obesity Day 2026, CAPPA said decisive policy action is urgently required to protect public health, particularly among children and young people. The organisation noted that obesity has become one of the world’s most pressing health challenges, citing projections that nearly half of the global population — about four billion people — could be living with overweight or obesity by 2035.
