Nigeria-China Security Ties Deepen as Chinese Consul Visits FCID Lagos

Consulate pledges support for police welfare, intelligence sharing and capacity building




The Nigeria-China relationship received a fresh boost as the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos.

The visit, which focused on strengthening cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and the Chinese community, covered security, intelligence sharing, capacity building, cultural exchange and police welfare.

Receiving the delegation, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of FCID Annex, Lagos, AIG Simeon U. Akpanudom, reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to maintaining a secure environment for Chinese nationals, businesses and other foreign residents in Nigeria.

Yuqing commended the Nigeria Police Force for its role in maintaining law and order and protecting Chinese nationals, businesses and other interests operating in the country.

She said the Chinese Consulate was exploring a cultural exchange programme and capacity development seminar that would provide opportunities for Nigerian police officers to interact with their Chinese counterparts and benefit from professional knowledge-sharing initiatives.

The Consul General also pledged continued cooperation with the Police, particularly through timely information that could assist in crime prevention, intelligence gathering and criminal investigations.

As part of the Consulate’s support for police welfare, she offered to facilitate a medical outreach programme focused on eye health for personnel of the FCID Annex, including eye screening and basic eye-care services.

Yuqing also invited the AIG and members of the FCID leadership to celebrations marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, describing the event as an avenue to deepen cultural understanding and friendship.

Responding, AIG Akpanudom welcomed the proposed initiatives, describing them as valuable opportunities for institutional cooperation, professional development and stronger relations between the Police and the Chinese community.

He particularly appreciated the proposed medical outreach, noting that the initiative would contribute to the welfare of FCID personnel.

The AIG also encouraged members of the Chinese community to continue providing relevant information and assistance to the Police, stressing that effective information sharing was essential to preventing and combating crime.

He expressed support for initiatives to promote Chinese-language learning among police personnel, saying improved language skills would enhance communication and operational cooperation between the Police and Chinese nationals.

The meeting ended with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening Nigeria–China cooperation through security collaboration, intelligence sharing, cultural exchange, capacity building and people-oriented welfare initiatives.

The visit also featured the presentation of a commemorative plaque symbolising the shared commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship between Nigeria and China.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health. In a statement signed by CAPPA’s Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe, and released in Lagos on Thursday, the group said the government must urgently strengthen laws that protect citizens from deceptive marketing and unhealthy food products.
