Ogun Police Deploy School Protection Squad as Schools Resume

The Ogun State Police Command has deployed its School Protection Squad across the state as schools resume academic activities, in a move aimed at strengthening security around educational institutions.

The deployment is part of the proactive and community-oriented policing strategy of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and is designed to protect pupils, teachers and other school personnel.

According to a statement signed by the state Police Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the squad will also secure school infrastructure, gather actionable intelligence and ensure swift response to emerging security threats.

As part of the initiative, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, recently received an executive delegation of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Safe School Club, led by its State Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Babatunde Lawal, at the Command Headquarters in Abeokuta.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation among the police, school authorities, parents, students and community stakeholders in identifying, reporting and preventing security threats within and around schools.

Ojajuni commended the initiative and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the partnership.

He charged members of the School Protection Squad to remain vigilant, maintain close contact with school communities and respond promptly to credible security information.

The CP also urged school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents, students and members of the public to remain alert and report suspicious persons, vehicles, movements or activities around schools.

The Command stressed the importance of early reporting, saying timely information could help prevent security incidents.

It urged residents to embrace the message: “See something, say something.”

For school-related emergencies, the Command said members of the public could contact the Ogun State Police through the Gateway Shield Emergency Line: 08000009111.

The Command assured residents that the School Protection Squad, working with the PCRC and other stakeholders, would remain vigilant and ready to protect schools, prevent threats and respond swiftly to emergencies across the state.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health.
