Freeman Street Mob Attack: Four Suspects Arrested Over Man's Death

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged mob attack that led to the death of a man, Basit Kolade, on Freeman Street, Lagos Island.


Kolade was allegedly attacked by a group of individuals following a road traffic incident at about 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.


The police in a statement by the spokesperson of the state command, SP Abimbola Adebisi said preliminary investigation showed that Kolade was travelling with his spouse from Ebute Metta towards Lagos Island in a black Lexus Jeep when a motorcycle allegedly collided with the vehicle from behind.


An argument reportedly followed, during which the vehicle allegedly reversed and hit the motorcycle, causing the rider and motorcycle to fall.


The incident reportedly attracted a group of people in the area, who allegedly attacked Kolade with dangerous weapons.


His spouse was rescued by some women in the vicinity, while Kolade was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.


The motorcycle rider allegedly involved in the incident survived and is currently receiving medical treatment, according to the Police.


The four suspects arrested are Khalid Rafiq, 20; Gafar Rahim, 21; Ibrahim Azeez, 33; and Samos Momoh, 21.


The Command said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other persons who allegedly participated in the attack.


The case, which is being treated as a homicide, has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, for further investigation and possible prosecution.


The Police warned residents against mob action, jungle justice and taking the law into their own hands, stressing that no individual or group has the legal authority to arrest, try, convict or execute another person.


The Command said the warning was in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, that cases of mob action resulting in death should be treated as homicide.


The IGP also directed that anyone who participates in, organises, incites or supports such attacks should face the full weight of the law.


The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, directed investigators to identify, arrest and prosecute all persons found culpable.


He assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and professional, adding that anyone found to have participated in the attack or otherwise contributed to Kolade’s death would be made to face the law.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health.
