MURIC Faults Nigeria’s Position On Palestine At UNGA

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has criticised Nigeria’s position at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, accusing the Federal Government of failing to sufficiently address the Palestinian question.

In a statement on Saturday, MURIC Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, also faulted Nigeria for not joining delegations that walked out of the UN General Assembly hall during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address on September 24.

Dozens of delegations left the chamber as Netanyahu began his speech, in a protest over Israel’s military actions and the situation in Gaza. Reports put the number of delegations that walked out at 77.

MURIC alleged that Nigeria failed to include the Palestinian question in its position paper at the General Assembly and described the country’s conduct at the event as regrettable.

The group also criticised Nigeria’s decision not to participate in the walkout, urging the Nigerian human rights community to speak out on what it described as the government’s position on the Palestinian issue.

Akintola cited the humanitarian situation in Gaza and called on Nigerians who support justice and human rights to hold the government accountable over its handling of the Palestinian question.

MURIC further urged the Nigerian government to give greater attention to the Palestinian crisis in its international engagements.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s address at the 81st UN General Assembly was delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Tinubu. 

The address focused, among other issues, on Nigeria’s call for permanent representation on the UN Security Council.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. World Obesity Day: CAPPA Urges Tougher Curbs on Junk Food Marketing

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa has called for stricter government regulation of junk food marketing, warning that aggressive promotion of unhealthy foods is fuelling rising obesity and other noncommunicable diseases in Nigeria. In a statement issued to mark World Obesity Day 2026, CAPPA said decisive policy action is urgently required to protect public health, particularly among children and young people. The organisation noted that obesity has become one of the world’s most pressing health challenges, citing projections that nearly half of the global population — about four billion people — could be living with overweight or obesity by 2035.
