First Lady Launches Nationwide Menstrual Hygiene Initiative in Gombe
First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the nationwide distribution of Flow with Confidence menstrual hygiene packs, aimed at empowering schoolgirls and addressing menstrual health challenges across the country.
The initiative, unveiled in Gombe on Thursday, will see 10,000 packs of disposable sanitary pads distributed to each state and the Federal Capital Territory through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
Each beneficiary is expected to receive a one-year supply.
Senator Tinubu described the intervention as vital to ensuring that no girl misses school because of her inability to afford sanitary products.
She noted that many girls in rural communities resort to unsafe alternatives or stay away from school during their menstrual cycle, often leading to setbacks in education and, in some cases, school dropouts.
She urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community heads to ensure the pads reach the intended beneficiaries.
“This trend must end, and this intervention, under the education framework of the Renewed Hope Initiative, is aimed at doing just that,” the First Lady said.
The Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, and the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, pledged government support to expand the initiative to more rural communities.
Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, also commended Mrs. Tinubu for her interventions in health, education, agriculture, and economic empowerment.
Earlier in the day, the First Lady declared open the 1st Gombe State Health Summit, where she emphasized that health is a pathway to economic prosperity, social development, and national growth.
She was also conferred with the traditional title of Sarauniya Yakin Kumo (Queen Warrior of Kumo) by the Emir of Akko, HRH Alhaji Umaru Muh’d Atiku.
