DHQ Denies Coup Attempt Report, Reaffirms Loyalty to President Tinubu

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false and malicious a report by an online publication alleging that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary activities was linked to an attempted military coup.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said the publication’s claim was intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among citizens.

He clarified that the cancellation of the anniversary parade was purely to allow President Bola Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country and to enable members of the Armed Forces sustain the tempo in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

“The report linking the parade’s cancellation to any form of coup attempt is entirely false, misleading, and mischievous,” the statement read.

Gusau also explained that the recent arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation had no political undertone, stressing that it was part of routine disciplinary measures aimed at upholding professionalism within the Armed Forces.

According to him, an investigative panel has already been constituted, and its findings will be made public upon conclusion.

He urged Nigerians to disregard rumours being spread by what he described as “purveyors of misinformation and enemies of the nation,” and to continue supporting security agencies in their efforts to safeguard the country.

Gusau reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ unwavering loyalty to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of President Tinubu, assuring that democracy in Nigeria remains strong and unshaken.
