ICPC to Prosecute Kano ‘Journalist’ Over Alleged ₦14 Million Fraud
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) says it will prosecute one Mr. Alkazim Kabir, also known as Abbati Kabiru Abuwa, a self-acclaimed journalist based in Kano, for alleged involvement in multiple fraudulent activities amounting to about ₦14 million.
According to the Commission, the decision to charge Mr. Kabir followed a series of petitions accusing him of engaging in fraud, impersonation of public officials, and obtaining money under false pretences.
ICPC investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly posed as various public figures, including aides to the President, Vice President, and members of the National Assembly, to defraud unsuspecting individuals.
In one instance, he reportedly obtained $3,300 and 1,620 Saudi Riyals from two victims while falsely claiming to be a senior aide to top government officials.
Further findings indicated that Mr. Kabir often exploited opportunities related to international religious travels. During one such trip to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, he allegedly borrowed 11,000 Saudi Riyals from a fellow pilgrim and later sent a forged bank receipt as proof of repayment.
He was also accused of issuing a fake ₦3.2 million transfer receipt to a travel agent who had helped arrange his flight, hotel, and train bookings.
The Commission said charges had been filed against the suspect and that he would be arraigned before a competent court of law once the case is assigned.
