Council of State Approves Professor Amupitan as INEC Chairman

The National Council of State has unanimously approved the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The appointment follows the completion of tenure by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman from 2015 until October 2025.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Amupitan’s nomination during the Council’s meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.
The President described the nominee as “apolitical” and commended his integrity and professional excellence.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State, who also spoke at the meeting, hailed Amupitan as “a man of integrity” and expressed confidence in his capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral processes.
In accordance with constitutional provisions, President Tinubu is expected to forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
Amupitan, 58, hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, making him the first person from the North-Central state to be nominated as INEC Chairman.
A Professor of Law at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), where he also serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Amupitan is an alumnus of the same university.
He specialises in Company Law, Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance, and Privatisation Law, and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014.
He earned his LL.B from UNIJOS in 1987, was called to the Bar in 1988, obtained an LL.M in 1993, and a Ph.D. in 2007.
He began his academic career in 1989 after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Bauchi State Publishing Corporation.
Beyond academia, Professor Amupitan has served in several leadership and advisory roles, including Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Board Member of Integrated Dairies Limited, and member of both the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Governing Council and the Council of Legal Education.
He is the author of several notable law texts, including Corporate Governance: Models and Principles (2008), Documentary Evidence in Nigeria (2008), and Principles of Company Law (2013).
Professor Amupitan is married and blessed with four children.
