Sylvester Ebhodaghe honoured with Silent Heroes Award, praised for mentoring media professionals

Publisher of National Daily Newspaper, Mr. Sylvester Ebhodaghe, has been honoured with the Silent Heroes Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to journalism and his mentorship of younger media professionals across Nigeria.

The award was presented to him by the Editor-in-Chief of RazorNews and former President of the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), Mr. Odita Sunday, during a brief ceremony held at the National Daily head office in Omole Phase 1, Lagos.

Although the honour was initially conferred on Mr. Ebhodaghe at the Silent Heroes Awards ceremony held on June 12, 2025, at the Wells Carlton Hotel, Asokoro, Abuja, he was unable to attend due to official engagements, leading to the special presentation in Lagos.

Presenting the plaque, Odita described Ebhodaghe as a “media colossus” who has silently shaped the careers of many journalists through mentorship, training, and example.

He recalled working under him at The Guardian Newspapers over two decades ago, where Ebhodaghe’s professionalism, humility, and commitment to excellence left a lasting impression.

“Mr. Ebhodaghe is a rare gem who embodies the true spirit of journalism. His mentorship helped many of us find direction in the profession, and his legacy continues to inspire younger journalists,” Odita said.

In his response, Ebhodaghe expressed appreciation for the honour and commended Odita for his consistency, leadership, and achievements in crime reporting.

He described him as one of the brightest products of his early mentorship who has remained committed to the ethics of journalism.

“I am deeply humbled by this recognition. It is fulfilling to see those you once guided grow into respected professionals shaping the media landscape,” Ebhodaghe said.

The event, attended by colleagues and admirers, highlighted the bond between two generations of media practitioners and celebrated Ebhodaghe’s quiet but impactful influence on Nigerian journalism.
