Police Link Alleged Killing of Emmanuel Nwanneniya to Land Dispute in Anambra, Reveal Use of Restricted Sedative

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested five suspects over the alleged murder of Emmanuel Nwanneniya, former Chairman and land agent of Ikem Nando Community in Anambra State, following investigations that uncovered the alleged use of a restricted veterinary sedative in the crime.

The breakthrough was announced by the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad (STS) after weeks of intelligence gathering, digital surveillance and coordinated operations. 

Police said investigations revealed that the killing may have been connected to a prolonged dispute over the management of proceeds from community land sales.

According to investigators, the dispute began after proceeds from the sale of community land were shared among the three clans that make up Ikem Nando Community. 

They said one of the clans reportedly received about N39 million, with community members agreeing that the money should be invested in a community hall and other development projects. 

Police said disagreements over the decision later escalated into hostility, threats and intimidation.

Investigators alleged that Emmanuel Nwanneniya was lured to a meeting under the pretence of discussing the purchase of a large expanse of land. 

Police said he was allegedly ambushed, restrained and injected multiple times with S.P.L. Ketamine Hydrochloride 500mg/10ml, before the suspects allegedly forced him to surrender access to his mobile phone and banking applications.

The victim’s wife, whose name was not disclosed, provided what police described as an early breakthrough in the case after she informed investigators that her husband left home to meet prospective land buyers but never returned. 

Police said her statement, alongside digital evidence and intelligence reports, helped trace the suspects.

During the parade in Abuja, community leaders also spoke on the events preceding the killing. 

Chief Ejimofor told journalists that he had allegedly received threats of kidnapping because of his support for using the land proceeds for community development. 

He said the threats were reported to the police before the death of Nwanneniya.

The Ikem Nando Community Youth Leader, Ikechukwu Onagor, also appealed to the police to investigate the death of his brother, which he alleged may be connected to the wider crisis. 

Police, however, said the matter remains under investigation and no conclusion has been reached.

Addressing journalists, the Coordinator of the Special Tactical Squad, ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey, described the operation as another achievement in intelligence-led policing. 

He commended the operatives involved and acknowledged the support of the Inspector-General of Police in ensuring the suspects were apprehended.

ACP Godfrey also expressed concern over the alleged access to restricted veterinary drugs and called on NAFDAC and other regulatory agencies to strengthen monitoring of controlled substances to prevent misuse.

The Nigeria Police Force said investigations are continuing and assured the public that anyone found connected to the alleged conspiracy will face the law, while reminding Nigerians that the suspects remain innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
