Ogun Police Bust Alleged Baby Factory in Mowe, Rescue Pregnant Women, Four Children

The Ogun State Police Command has dismantled an alleged baby factory at Abaren Village, Mowe, rescuing two pregnant women and four children while arresting six suspects in connection with suspected human trafficking and illegal adoption activities.

The operation, carried out by operatives of the Mowe Division on Monday, followed sustained intelligence on activities allegedly taking place at the facility located on Toluwalase Street, Abaren Village, via Gbarinmole.

The command, in a statement by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Oluborode Opeyemi, said the two rescued women, identified as 23-year-old Ilesanmi Foluke, who is seven months pregnant, and 20-year-old Ejekwa Melody, who is eight months pregnant, were found at the facility during the raid.

Four children, comprising two boys and two girls, were also rescued.

The suspects arrested were Florence Glory Ogbona, 58; Magdalene Julius, 63; Chidike Egwuonwu, 40; Onyechu Chidike, 35; Stephen Ogbona, 39; and an attending nurse, Oseni Kusamotu Idaya.

The Command said further intelligence-led operations led detectives to a hospital within the Mowe axis, where another victim, 26-year-old Blessing Bright Effiong, had reportedly given birth to a baby boy on August 20.

According to the Police, Effiong was receiving medical treatment at the hospital when operatives discovered that the whereabouts of her newborn could not be accounted for, leading to the arrest of the attending nurse as investigations intensified to locate the baby.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation into the alleged activities of the syndicate and to locate the missing newborn.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Mowe Division operatives for their prompt response and operational efficiency.

Ojajuni reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating human trafficking, child exploitation and other forms of criminality across the state.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious activities to assist the Police in protecting vulnerable persons and communities.

CAPPA Backs FG’s Health Tax Policy, Seeks Higher Levy on Sugary Drinks

  The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to channel excise-tax revenues from alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) into health financing, but urged authorities to raise the levy on sugary drinks to make it more effective. CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases.
