Police Honour 10 Fallen Heroes, Vow to Hunt Down Bandits

IGP Disu: Their sacrifice will not be in vain



The Nigeria Police Force has honoured 10 officers of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) who lost their lives while battling suspected bandits in Kebbi State.

A memorial service was held on Monday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja in honour of the officers, who were killed during an encounter with a heavily armed group of suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State on August 10.

Senior police officers, colleagues and relatives of the deceased gathered at the ceremony to pay tribute to the fallen personnel and honour their courage, service and sacrifice.

The officers were part of a police team that confronted the armed group, which was moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.

Speaking at the memorial, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the deceased as gallant officers who paid the supreme price in the service of the nation.

Disu expressed condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them that the Police Force would continue to support them and ensure that the sacrifice of their loved ones was never forgotten.

The IGP vowed that the Force would not be intimidated or relent in the fight against banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes.

He said the Police would continue efforts to identify, pursue and bring to justice those responsible for attacks on its personnel and innocent citizens.

The Commander of the Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, said subsequent operational assessments showed that the casualties inflicted on the attackers were significantly higher than initially reported.

Shogunle urged SIS personnel not to allow the loss of their colleagues to weaken their morale, but to continue the fight with the courage and determination demonstrated by the fallen officers.

Speaking on behalf of the bereaved families, Grace Bala Buba, daughter of one of the deceased officers, thanked the Nigeria Police Force for honouring their loved ones and supporting their families.

The IGP urged police personnel to remember the fallen officers with pride and draw renewed determination from their sacrifice.

He reaffirmed the Force’s resolve to sustain operations against banditry, terrorism and other violent criminality, while strengthening collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure that those responsible for attacks on police officers and innocent citizens face justice.

The University of Lagos Alumni Association has unveiled plans for its 55th Anniversary Awards and Recognition Dinner, scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases.
