AIG Akpanudom Warns FCID Officers Against Illegal Arrests, Rights Abuse

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos, Simeon Akpanudom, has warned officers against unlawful arrests, prolonged detention of suspects, extortion and other acts of misconduct, declaring that violators will face sanctions.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, FCID Annex, ASP Mayegun Aminat, following the Formation's Lecture Parade held at the FCID Annex, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos.

According to the statement, the AIG directed detectives to carry out investigations professionally, fairly and in strict compliance with the law, stressing that investigators are fact-finders and not judges. 

He cautioned officers against indiscriminate transfer of case files, the criminalisation of civil disputes and any action capable of violating the fundamental rights of citizens.

Akpanudom also reiterated the Inspector-General of Police's vision of building a professional, accountable and people-oriented police force, urging supervisory officers to give greater attention to the welfare of personnel, especially officers who are ill or off duty, to improve morale and productivity.

The AIG further warned officers against corruption, bribery, extortion and other unethical practices capable of tarnishing the image of the Nigeria Police Force. 

He urged personnel to embrace teamwork, continuous training in cybercrime and digital policing, and maintain professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. World Obesity Day: CAPPA Urges Tougher Curbs on Junk Food Marketing

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa has called for stricter government regulation of junk food marketing, warning that aggressive promotion of unhealthy foods is fuelling rising obesity and other noncommunicable diseases in Nigeria. In a statement issued to mark World Obesity Day 2026, CAPPA said decisive policy action is urgently required to protect public health, particularly among children and young people. The organisation noted that obesity has become one of the world’s most pressing health challenges, citing projections that nearly half of the global population — about four billion people — could be living with overweight or obesity by 2035.
