Sanwo-Olu to Receive 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize in Washington

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been named recipient of the 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize by the Millennium Excellence Award USA.

The award, according to a statement by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, follows a selection process that recognised what the organisers described as Governor Sanwo-Olu’s achievements and the developmental trajectory of Lagos State under his leadership.

The honour will be conferred under the Royal Patronage of the Asantehene of Kumasi, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who will personally present the award alongside Her Royal Highness Lady Julia, Queen Consort.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, August 29, 2026, with the red carpet beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The Millennium Excellence Awards USA recognises individuals of African heritage and global contributors who have made significant contributions in areas including business, science, arts, philanthropy and public service.

As part of the event, Sanwo-Olu is expected to deliver a keynote address on positioning Lagos State to attract increased investment from diaspora communities.

The address will focus on opportunities in urban infrastructure, finance and other investment-ready projects in Lagos, described in the statement as Africa’s largest sub-national economy.

The Governor will also participate in sessions and roundtable discussions focused on strengthening economic and social ties between Lagos and the diaspora.

Past recipients of the Millennium Excellence Awards include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Dr. Kofi Annan, Mo Ibrahim, Wole Soyinka, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.

UNILAG Alumni Association to Mark 55th Anniversary with Awards, Fundraising for Education Support

The University of Lagos Alumni Association has unveiled plans for its 55th Anniversary Awards and Recognition Dinner, scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. Speaking at a news briefing in Akoka, President of the Association, Engr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele, said the event will celebrate distinguished alumni while raising funds to strengthen education at the institution.  Proceeds, he noted, will support scholarships for indigent students, provide research and teaching equipment, and fund a new 1,800-bed hostel project. CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. Oluwafemi noted that food and beverage companies increasingly exploit festive periods such as Christmas and New Year to aggressively promote sugary drinks and ultra-processed foods, embedding them in cultural and religious celebrations through advertising, sponsorships, and branded donations.
