Enugu CP, Giwa urges Nigerian youths to reject manipulation, violence, digital criminality
The Enugu State Police Command has launched a campaign against political and digital thuggery, urging young Nigerians to reject manipulation by political actors and use their influence to promote peace, democracy and responsible citizenship.
The campaign was launched by the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, during a Police–Youth Dialogue held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu, as part of activities marking the Nigeria Police Force International Youth Day 2026.
Speaking during the interactive session, Giwa urged youths to resist attempts by politicians and other actors to exploit them for violent or criminal purposes, stressing that young Nigerians have a crucial role to play in strengthening democracy and national security.
He warned youths against using digital platforms for incitement, intimidation, harassment and other forms of criminality, urging them instead to channel their energy and influence into constructive civic participation, innovation and leadership.
The Commissioner also responded to questions from youths and students on the role of young people during elections, police responsibilities during electoral processes, electoral offences and prosecution, as well as issues surrounding police professionalism and accountability.
Giwa reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professional, impartial and accountable policing, while calling for stronger cooperation between the Police and young people.
The participating youth and student groups, including the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Nigeria Youth Congress, Nsukka Youth Assembly, Igbo Youth Movement and National Association of Nigerian Students, pledged to work with the Police and shun political and digital thuggery.
The event also attracted the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Students Affairs, Hon. Prisca Okeke; Head of the Department of Public Administration, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Ezeodili Walter Obi; representatives of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, Obra Foundation/Obra Legal, Presidents-General of communities, as well as other youths and police officers.
Giwa described the campaign as a critical initiative of the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at building trust and stronger partnerships between the Police and young Nigerians.
He urged youths across Enugu State to embrace the campaign’s message: “My Future Is Greater Than Political Thuggery,” and choose peaceful participation, responsible citizenship and positive leadership over violence and criminal manipulation.
