President Tinubu Orders NLNG to End Gas Flaring, Prioritise Domestic Supply

President Bola Tinubu has charged the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited to eliminate gas flaring and ensure the country’s abundant natural gas resources translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.

Tinubu gave the directive at the State House in Abuja when the NLNG Board, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Adeleye Falade, paid him a visit.

The President said ending gas flaring was critical to converting environmental hazards into productive economic assets, while urging the company to prioritise domestic energy needs and affordable supply alongside its international export activities.

Tinubu assured the NLNG delegation that his administration would provide the necessary incentives to expand operational capacity and promote growth across the energy sector.

Briefing the President, Falade said NLNG had generated more than 150 billion dollars in revenue since inception and paid approximately 47 billion dollars in dividends to its shareholders, including the Federal Government, which owns a 49 per cent stake in the company.

On production, the NLNG chief said the company’s operational capacity had recently increased from four to five processing trains following improvements in crude oil production and security across the sector.

He also disclosed that all Liquefied Petroleum Gas produced by NLNG was currently being channelled to the domestic market as part of efforts to stabilise local supply.

Falade further announced plans for the commissioning of Train 7, which is expected to increase the company’s overall production capacity by 35 per cent and strengthen Nigeria’s five per cent share of the global LNG market.

He also told the President that construction of the NLNG-funded Bonny-Bodo Road and Bridge project had been completed and was awaiting official inauguration.

The meeting was attended by senior NLNG executives, including Deputy Managing Director Olakunle Osobu, TotalEnergies Country Chair Matthieu Bouyer and Nigeria Agip Exploration Managing Director Maurizio Pinna.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and other senior government officials were also present at the meeting.

CAPPA Urges Policymakers to Regulate Festive Food Marketing in Public Interest

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on Nigerian policymakers to urgently regulate the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, warning that weak oversight is allowing corporate interests to undermine public health, particularly during festive periods. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos while presenting a new report titled Unhealthy Food Hijack of Festive Periods in Nigeria, CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, said incremental policy responses were no longer sufficient given Nigeria’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases.
