Police Debunk Reports of IGP's Alleged 'Shoot-on-Sight' Order

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports claiming that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu directed officers to "shoot anyone with illegal firearms," describing the reports as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Inieduon Saturday, the Force said the police chief's remarks at a stakeholders' meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, were taken out of context and did not amount to a "shoot-on-sight" directive.

According to the statement, the IGP merely reminded officers that only legally authorised security personnel are permitted to carry firearms and expressed concern over the proliferation of illegal weapons used in kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cultism and other violent crimes.

The Police explained that Disu also drew the attention of officers to Force Order 237, which outlines the legal conditions under which police personnel may use firearms while carrying out their duties.

It stressed that the Inspector-General instructed officers to operate strictly within the law and the approved Rules of Engagement, insisting that he never directed officers to shoot anyone solely for possessing an illegal firearm.

The Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and rights of Nigerians through professional policing that respects the Constitution, human rights and other extant laws.

It also urged the media and members of the public to verify information before publishing or sharing it, warning that inaccurate reports on security issues could create unnecessary panic, mislead the public and undermine confidence in security institutions.

The Police encouraged the public to watch the full video of the Inspector-General's remarks for the proper context, reiterating its commitment to enforcing the law fairly, professionally and within the limits of the law.

CAPPA Backs FG’s Health Tax Policy, Seeks Higher Levy on Sugary Drinks

  The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to channel excise-tax revenues from alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) into health financing, but urged authorities to raise the levy on sugary drinks to make it more effective. As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health.
