IGP, NPTF, POWA Launch Skills Empowerment Scheme for Police Families

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun Disu, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) have launched a skills acquisition and economic empowerment programme for spouses of junior police officers to improve family welfare and promote financial independence.

The maiden initiative, held at the M.D. Abubakar Police Barracks in Dei-Dei, Abuja, was themed “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment.”

The event was hosted by the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, and attended by the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mohammed Sheidu, the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, and beneficiaries drawn from across the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking at the event, the Inspector-General of Police said the programme was aimed at strengthening the welfare of police families, stressing that the well-being of officers is closely tied to the stability of their households.

“This programme is an investment in the stability and wellbeing of police families. Officer welfare cannot be separated from that of their households,” the IGP said, urging beneficiaries to use the skills and resources provided as a foundation for long-term financial independence.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, said the initiative underscores the Fund’s commitment to improving the economic fortunes of police families through sustainable livelihood opportunities.

According to him, the vocational training and start-up packs provided under the programme are designed to help beneficiaries establish viable businesses that will support their families and contribute to community development.

Also speaking, the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the morale and professionalism of the Force rather than an act of charity.

She said national security begins with stable families and pledged that POWA would continue collaborating with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to sustain the programme, while calling on other government agencies and private organisations to support similar initiatives.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the welfare of its personnel and their families through partnerships with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, POWA and other stakeholders aimed at building stronger police families and a more effective police service nationwide.

CAPPA Backs FG’s Health Tax Policy, Seeks Higher Levy on Sugary Drinks

  The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to channel excise-tax revenues from alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) into health financing, but urged authorities to raise the levy on sugary drinks to make it more effective. At a national health-financing dialogue in Abuja, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed that a draft policy is being finalised to earmark revenues from “sin taxes” for healthcare.  The proposal will soon be submitted to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare. World Food Day: CAPPA Warns Against Corporate Capture of Nigeria’s Food System

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health. In a statement signed by CAPPA’s Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe, and released in Lagos on Thursday, the group said the government must urgently strengthen laws that protect citizens from deceptive marketing and unhealthy food products.
