Trump Commends Tinubu's Anti-Terror Efforts, Backs Security Partnership

United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership in tackling terrorism, reaffirming America's commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Nigeria.

In a letter dated July 6, 2026, President Trump commended Tinubu's resolve to confront terrorism and address violence affecting Christian communities across parts of the country.

"I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities. It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous," Trump wrote.

The letter, released by the Presidency on Wednesday, highlighted the growing security partnership between both countries, including the establishment of a Joint Working Group co-chaired by the National Security Advisers of Nigeria and the United States.

According to the Presidency, the partnership has focused on intelligence sharing, military training and joint operations aimed at combating terrorism.

It noted that one of the major outcomes of the collaboration was the May 16 operation against ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad region, which reportedly led to the killing of the group's leader, Abubakar Al-Minoki, and several of his associates.

Trump also said the United States had deployed Special Operations Forces to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria with training, intelligence and operational capacity to strengthen the country's fight against terrorism.

"The United States-Nigeria relationship is crucial at a time where conflict has spread across West Africa and around the world. We both share a mutual goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms," the U.S. President stated.

The Presidency added that the renewed security collaboration was further strengthened during the recent visit of the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, to Abuja, where he held talks with senior Nigerian officials on expanding cooperation in security and other strategic areas.

I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities and it is a true honor to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.

“The United States-Nigeria relationship is crucial at a time where conflict has spread across West Africa and around the world. We both share a mutual goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms, and our historic US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap has established a robust framework to accomplish this feat.

“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces—among the most elite military units anywhere in the world—to equip the brave men and women in the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland and ensure the safety and security of citizens, particularly those of faith who have been under attack. I look forward to our continued discussions over the course of my Presidency."

CAPPA Backs FG’s Health Tax Policy, Seeks Higher Levy on Sugary Drinks

  The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to channel excise-tax revenues from alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) into health financing, but urged authorities to raise the levy on sugary drinks to make it more effective. At a national health-financing dialogue in Abuja, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed that a draft policy is being finalised to earmark revenues from “sin taxes” for healthcare.  The proposal will soon be submitted to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare. As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health.
