Police Clarify IGP Disu's Remarks, Deny 'Shoot-on-Sight' Order

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports claiming that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu issued a "shoot-on-sight" order during a stakeholders' meeting in Makurdi, Benue State.

In a clarification issued on Saturday, the Force said the IGP's remarks had been taken out of context, insisting that he never directed officers to shoot suspects on sight.

According to the police, Disu merely reminded officers that they had been briefed on Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational conditions governing the use of firearms by police personnel.

The Force said the Inspector-General emphasised that officers understand when the use of firearms is lawful and must always act in line with the established Rules of Engagement.

It added that the IGP also warned that illegal possession of firearms and violent killings would not be tolerated.

The Police urged members of the public to rely on the Inspector-General's full remarks, saying a video of the meeting clearly provides the proper context of his comments.

The clarification followed widespread media reports suggesting that the police chief had issued a "shoot-on-sight" directive during his visit to Benue State.

CAPPA Backs FG’s Health Tax Policy, Seeks Higher Levy on Sugary Drinks

  The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to channel excise-tax revenues from alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) into health financing, but urged authorities to raise the levy on sugary drinks to make it more effective. At a national health-financing dialogue in Abuja, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed that a draft policy is being finalised to earmark revenues from “sin taxes” for healthcare.  The proposal will soon be submitted to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare. As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health. In a statement signed by CAPPA’s Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe, and released in Lagos on Thursday, the group said the government must urgently strengthen laws that protect citizens from deceptive marketing and unhealthy food products.
