Police Detain Four Officers Over Viral Stop-and-Search Incident on Lagos-Benin Expressway

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced disciplinary proceedings against four officers captured in a viral video allegedly displaying unprofessional conduct and making derogatory ethnic remarks during a stop-and-search operation on the Lagos-Benin Expressway.

The Force in a statement by its spokesman, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the officers, comprising one Assistant Superintendent of Police and three Inspectors, have been identified and taken into custody pending an orderly room trial.

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, directed the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State to carry out a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine the level of involvement of each officer and recommend appropriate disciplinary measures.

According to the Police, the conduct seen in the video does not reflect the values and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Force stressed that ethnic profiling and disrespect towards any citizen would not be tolerated, warning that officers who violate its code of conduct would be held accountable.

It reaffirmed its commitment to fair, ethical and professional policing, pledging to continue efforts to build public confidence and strengthen trust between the police and the communities they serve.

CAPPA Backs FG’s Health Tax Policy, Seeks Higher Levy on Sugary Drinks

  The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to channel excise-tax revenues from alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) into health financing, but urged authorities to raise the levy on sugary drinks to make it more effective. At a national health-financing dialogue in Abuja, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed that a draft policy is being finalised to earmark revenues from “sin taxes” for healthcare.  The proposal will soon be submitted to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare. World Food Day: CAPPA Warns Against Corporate Capture of Nigeria’s Food System

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health. In a statement signed by CAPPA’s Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe, and released in Lagos on Thursday, the group said the government must urgently strengthen laws that protect citizens from deceptive marketing and unhealthy food products.
