NLNG Eyes Expansion Beyond Train 7, Pushes for Greater Gas Development
The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited has announced plans to expand its operations beyond the ongoing Train 7 project, saying Nigeria must urgently unlock its vast gas resources to maximise economic opportunities and strengthen its position in the global energy market.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NLNG, Adeleye Falade, disclosed this on Tuesday in Lagos during the presentation of the 2026 NLNG Facts and Figures, where he outlined the company's achievements and long-term growth strategy.
Falade said the completion of the Train 7 project would increase NLNG's production capacity by 35 per cent from 22 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 30 MTPA, while domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production would rise by 50 per cent.
He revealed that the company had already commenced exploratory discussions on further expansion projects beyond Train 7, noting that Nigeria risks losing relevance in the global LNG market if it fails to monetise its abundant gas resources.
According to him, although Nigeria has proven gas reserves of about 209 trillion cubic feet, with an estimated additional 600 trillion cubic feet yet to be proven, the country has yet to fully harness its gas potential.
Falade said NLNG has delivered more than 6,000 LNG cargoes worldwide since it began operations, generated about $150 billion in revenue, paid $47.2 billion in dividends to shareholders and remitted more than $10 billion in taxes to the Federal Government.
He also disclosed that the company supplied a record 500,000 tonnes of cooking gas to the domestic market in 2025 and has dedicated all its LPG production to Nigeria since 2022 to improve access to cleaner cooking fuel.
The NLNG boss said the company has helped reduce Nigeria's gas flaring rate from about 65 per cent to below 20 per cent by commercialising associated gas that was previously flared.
He added that NLNG would continue to invest in community development, citing the completion of the Bonny-Bodo Road and plans to support its extension to the East-West Road in partnership with the Federal Government.
Falade stressed that gas would remain a major component of the global energy mix for decades and urged Nigeria to accelerate investments in gas development to drive industrialisation, create jobs and boost foreign exchange earnings.
