IGP Disu Reaffirms Commitment to Police Reform, State Policing

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to police reform, state policing and stronger inter-agency collaboration to address the country's evolving security challenges.

The IGP gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving the Commandant, management, directing staff and participants of the National Defence College (NDC) on a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. 

Discussions focused on police reform, state policing, command and coordination protocols, and other emerging internal security issues.

The Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral A. Ahmed, said a research paper presented during the visit was produced entirely by police officers undergoing training at the College, with faculty members providing only academic guidance. 

He said the study offers practical and implementable recommendations that would contribute to the national conversation on police reform and strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to tackle future security challenges.

Responding, IGP Disu described the study as timely and relevant, commending its depth, scholarly quality and practical value. 

He said the research would provide a solid foundation for shaping the framework for state policing through its comprehensive analysis, sound methodology and recommendations drawn from comparative experiences of countries operating state police systems. 

He also reaffirmed the Force's commitment to sustained collaboration with the National Defence College and other strategic institutions to enhance internal security and national development.

CAPPA Backs FG’s Health Tax Policy, Seeks Higher Levy on Sugary Drinks

  The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to channel excise-tax revenues from alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) into health financing, but urged authorities to raise the levy on sugary drinks to make it more effective. At a national health-financing dialogue in Abuja, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed that a draft policy is being finalised to earmark revenues from “sin taxes” for healthcare.  The proposal will soon be submitted to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare. World Food Day: CAPPA Warns Against Corporate Capture of Nigeria’s Food System

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health. In a statement signed by CAPPA’s Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe, and released in Lagos on Thursday, the group said the government must urgently strengthen laws that protect citizens from deceptive marketing and unhealthy food products.
