Media Crucial to Tackling Nigeria's Security Challenges – Defence Minister

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has described the media as a vital partner in addressing Nigeria's security challenges, saying effective collaboration with journalists is essential in the fight against terrorism and other asymmetric threats.

The minister made the remarks while receiving the executive members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defence in Abuja.

Musa said the changing nature of insecurity requires closer cooperation between the military and the media to ensure Nigerians receive timely, accurate and credible information on defence matters.

"The military really needs the media at this period of asymmetric warfare. My office will continue to maintain an open-door policy to foster a cordial relationship with the media and ensure the dissemination of accurate information to the public," he said.

The minister also urged defence correspondents to uphold fairness, balance and professionalism in their reportage, stressing that responsible journalism is critical to national security and public confidence.

He assured the delegation that the ministry would consider proposals presented by the association and implement those deemed feasible.

Earlier, DECAN President, Odita Sunday, congratulated Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as recognition of his professionalism and service to the country.

He announced that the association would confer the title of Grand Patron of DECAN on the minister during its conference and award ceremony scheduled for October 2026, where it will also unveil its publication, "Defence Correspondents."

Odita reaffirmed the association's commitment to factual, balanced and responsible reporting of defence issues and called for stronger collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and defence correspondents through regular media engagements and timely dissemination of information.

He said enhanced cooperation would strengthen public confidence in the Armed Forces and ensure Nigerians have access to credible information on defence and national security.

CAPPA Backs FG’s Health Tax Policy, Seeks Higher Levy on Sugary Drinks

  The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to channel excise-tax revenues from alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) into health financing, but urged authorities to raise the levy on sugary drinks to make it more effective. At a national health-financing dialogue in Abuja, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed that a draft policy is being finalised to earmark revenues from “sin taxes” for healthcare.  The proposal will soon be submitted to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare. World Food Day: CAPPA Warns Against Corporate Capture of Nigeria’s Food System

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Food Day 2025, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised concern over the growing dominance of ultra-processed foods in the country’s food system, warning that weak regulation and unchecked corporate influence are endangering public health. In a statement signed by CAPPA’s Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe, and released in Lagos on Thursday, the group said the government must urgently strengthen laws that protect citizens from deceptive marketing and unhealthy food products.
