Police Reforms: IGP Disu Unveils New Measures, Enforces Accountability

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has convened an emergency conference with senior police leadership, announcing sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening accountability, discipline, and operational efficiency across the Nigeria Police Force.

The high-level meeting, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, brought together members of the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and Commissioners of Police to address pressing national security concerns and outline new strategic directives.

In his address, the IGP stressed the need for transparency, leadership responsibility, and intelligence-driven policing, noting that the country’s evolving security challenges require a more responsive and accountable Force.

He also addressed the recent extra-judicial killing incident in Delta State, describing it as unlawful and contrary to the core values of the Force. Disu confirmed that officers involved in the incident have been dismissed and recommended for prosecution, reiterating a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct.

“As leaders, we must uphold the highest standards of professionalism. No officer is above the law,” he said.

Highlighting operational gains for April 2026, the police chief disclosed that nationwide intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of 28 suspected terrorists, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbery suspects, 85 kidnapping suspects, and 54 suspected cultists.

He added that 189 kidnapped victims were rescued, while 140 firearms, 1,074 rounds of ammunition, and 37 stolen vehicles were recovered within the same period.

As part of structural reforms, the IGP announced the establishment of a restructured Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to enhance rapid response to serious crimes. According to him, the unit will operate on intelligence-based deployments, backed by specialised training and strict adherence to human rights standards.

Disu further directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to deepen community policing efforts through regular town hall meetings with stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community groups. He also mandated that police chiefs make their contact details accessible to the public to improve trust and communication.

The IGP reaffirmed that ongoing reforms within the Force are focused on professionalism, discipline, human rights compliance, and accountability, supported by mechanisms such as the Police Complaints Response Unit.

He assured Nigerians of the Force’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while upholding the rule of law.
