IGP Disu Meets INEC Chairman, Assures Security Ahead of Elections
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured Nigerians of adequate security ahead of upcoming elections across the country, pledging a robust partnership between the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The assurance came during a meeting at the Force Headquarters in Abuja where the IGP hosted the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, and his delegation to formalise a strategic roadmap for peaceful elections.
The meeting, attended by members of the Force Management Team, INEC National Commissioners, and senior police officers, focused on security preparations for the Ekiti and Osun off-cycle governorship elections, forthcoming bye-elections, and the 2027 general elections.
In his remarks, Professor Amupitan stressed the need for proactive security measures and specialised training for personnel involved in election duties. He also emphasised the importance of ensuring a secure environment for Internally Displaced Persons and Persons Living with Disabilities to exercise their voting rights freely.
Responding, IGP Disu described the visit as timely and important for democratic stability in the country.
He disclosed that the Police Force had already activated strategic security measures, including intelligence mapping to curb political violence, cult-related activities, and voter intimidation.
According to him, the Force is also strengthening operational plans for the secure movement of electoral materials and personnel, while enhancing collaboration with other security agencies to ensure smooth election operations.
The IGP further stated that officers deployed for election duties would operate strictly within the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
He noted that personnel are currently undergoing intensive training on rules of engagement, professionalism, and protection of human rights during electoral operations.
“As the lead agency in election security management, the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for misconduct. Any officer found undermining the credibility of the electoral process will be sanctioned in accordance with the law,” he said.
Disu also reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to ensuring a safe and peaceful atmosphere for all voters, particularly vulnerable groups, while calling for stronger collaboration between INEC, security agencies, and other stakeholders ahead of the elections.
