Lagos APC Criticises PDP’s 2026 National Convention, Says Party Has Lost Relevance
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has faulted the conduct of the 2026 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the event as evidence of the opposition party’s diminishing national relevance.
In a statement issued o/n Sunday, the APC’s spokesman, Mogaji (Hon.) Oluseye Olaniran Oladejo, said the convention, which held over the weekend, failed to demonstrate cohesion or renewal within the PDP.
He noted that the absence of several key party leaders, including some serving governors, raised questions about internal unity.
Oladejo also pointed to reports that delegates from about thirteen states did not participate in the exercise, arguing that such omissions suggested a widening fracture within the opposition party.
The APC further highlighted the reported non-attendance of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who ordinarily monitor national conventions of political parties.
According to the ruling party, the decision amounted to a loss of legitimacy for the gathering.
“The combination of poor attendance, internal disagreements and the lack of INEC’s presence reflects a political organisation struggling to regain stability,” the statement said.
The ruling party added that the convention provided little indication of strategic direction ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that the situation could weaken Nigeria’s opposition landscape and, by extension, democratic accountability.
While contrasting the situation with what it described as ongoing national reforms under President Bola Tinubu, the Lagos APC argued that the PDP must address its internal crises if it hopes to remain a relevant national contender.
