Lagos APC Accuses Peter Obi of Politicising Terrorism Over Kanu Verdict
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for rejecting the proposed life sentence for detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, accusing him of politicising issues of national security.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesman, Hon. Seye Oladejo, the party said Obi’s comments on the ongoing judicial process were “reckless” and aimed at gaining political relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Oladejo said Obi had “shamelessly inserted himself” into a legal matter before the courts, describing his intervention as an attempt “to harvest sympathy” after losing political influence.
“Obi’s misguided attempt to tackle the Federal Government and reject a valid court ruling is nothing more than the cry of a man whose political career is in its last throes,” the APC spokesman said.

The party accused the former Anambra State governor of double standards for allegedly refusing to condemn violent activities linked to IPOB while publicly criticising the Federal Government’s handling of terrorism-related offences in other parts of the country.
It also questioned what it described as Obi’s “inconsistency”, alleging that he had maintained “criminal silence” during periods of violence and economic disruption in the South-East.
“It is deceitful to preach morality to the Nigerian state while ignoring the innocent citizens maimed, extorted and killed under IPOB’s reign of terror,” the statement added.
The Lagos APC maintained that matters relating to treason, terrorism and national stability should not be influenced by political interests, insisting that the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu would continue to handle such cases “with firmness, maturity and constitutional authority.”
The party urged Nigerians to disregard what it termed Obi’s “self-serving” statements, saying national security must not be subjected to “the theatrics of a desperate politician.”
Obi had in an earlier statement faulted the reported life sentence recommendation for Kanu, insisting that justice, fairness and dialogue were necessary for resolving grievances in the South-East.
