APC Berates Peter Obi Over U.S. Designation Comment, Accuses Him of Politicizing National Issues
The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has berated former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, over his recent reaction to the United States’ classification of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” accusing him of exploiting the issue for political mileage.
In a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, the APC said Obi’s belated comment exposed his “habitual opportunism and selective outrage,” noting that true leadership requires defending the nation’s integrity even in moments of global criticism.
“Peter Obi’s reaction was neither timely nor sincere. It came only after sustained public questioning of his silence. His attempt to politicize such a serious matter reflects a pattern of grandstanding rather than genuine patriotism”, Oladejo said.
The party accused the former Anambra governor of seeking political relevance through Nigeria’s challenges, alleging that he often celebrates negative foreign assessments instead of offering constructive solutions.
“It is unfortunate that Mr. Obi appears more comfortable echoing the views of foreign observers than acknowledging the efforts being made by the Tinubu administration to restore security and stability,” the statement said.
“He sees every national difficulty as an opportunity for political resurrection.”
According to the APC, President Bola Tinubu’s government has demonstrated commitment to reversing insecurity and improving governance through strategic military restructuring, enhanced intelligence coordination, and bold economic reforms that address the roots of unrest.
“Rather than join hands with patriotic Nigerians in supporting these efforts, Obi and his online supporters prefer to recycle grievances from 2023 and indulge in armchair criticism,” Oladejo said.
The party urged the Labour Party flagbearer to rise above partisanship and show genuine commitment to national progress, emphasizing that “patriotism is not about selective outrage or conditional loyalty.”
“Leadership is about consistency, courage, and responsibility — not waiting for public pressure before speaking on national issues,” the statement added.
Reaffirming support for the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Lagos APC assured Nigerians that the Tinubu administration is steering the nation toward sustainable security and economic growth, despite distractions from “those invested in pessimism.”
“Nigeria will overcome its current challenges. Our focus remains on building a nation that works for all, not on trading cheap political points at the expense of national unity.”
